Detail / Floral Object Assembly

Detail of 'Communion': Floral composition / found object assembly. This Harkrader composition consist of an open-faced cordless handset (communication) that is embellished with crystals, glass and metal, all residing on the face of the motherboard of the cordless instrument. Symbolic of communication, hence; communion, which may be interpreted as a means of contact with the supernatural, a higher being, a celebration of the body of Christ, humanity, and ourselves as we 'talk to ourselves' when no one else will listen. This composition is symbolic, elegant, feminine, urban and delicate.

New Sculpture In Progress / Detail Floral

Check back for the title of this small floral sculpture in progress. Harkrader's sculpture is, at times, created in parallel to the paintings on canvas. For example, the floral abstracts series may be in two dimensional canvas and 3D sculpture.

Zodiac Queen & The Magical Silver Spoon

Sculpture anyone? Harkrader's 'Zodiac Queen' with delicate feather wings stands tall on her throne of wooden bowl, porcelain knob, metal ring, silver spoon, blue glass, glass eye and surrounded by a halo composition from an antique pastry cutter. Lion is a symbol of constellation, sign of zodiac, symbol of sun gods, Bali funeral sarcophagus and a core in Babylonian artwork. Venice, Italy is known as the “City of Lions”. Lions were used for thousands of years in mostly religious contexts of Christianity, Celtic, and Gospel of Mark. Winged lions may represent the Divine (angels) and denote strength, aggression, and power. Harkrader experimented with multiple composition possibilities before assembling this found object sculpture. (10"x6"x6")

It is January after all

The heat wave is over. Make room for the flakes. This seems like a good eve to escape and recall an October visit to Lake Tahoe--the second deepest lake in America. Harkrader had not published this image of a sculpture from his environmental series. This stone sculpture may still be standing (not!). Constructed from rocks that were scoured during the ice age, this totem is in homage to the native Washoe people whom lived in harmony with this earth location. Located on the beach 5 miles north of Incline Village where the artist's cousin Ron has lived since 1970.

Domestication (Once Again) Trumps Nature

Nine domestic cats circle the carcas of the dead song bird after the kill. Blood on their paws and teeth are testimony to the assault on nature. Symbolic of real time neighborhood wildlife under assualt from the ever growing domestic feline population.
This small sculpture is available and affordable. Rusted metal serves as a platform for 'the action' all mounted on a plastic pedestal. Nine action figures (feline) circle the bird sculpted from clay, attached feathers and hand painted by the artist. Additional images and price available upon request

Enigma Echo (Secret Copy) Culture Clash

Culture Clash is no secret. The world is shrinking. There are few places for cultures to escape the shifting wave of humanity that is moving across the globe at a rapid pace. Colonialism has always nurtured the culture of cheap labor for economic reasons and by doing so now face an embedded and rapidly developing diverse landscape of humanity that bump up against the status quo of western culture. This sculpture is symbolic of two such cultures of East vs. West.
A hooded action figure stands across from the military garbed warrior who is bearing the logo of Walmart on his backpack. An antique fishing lure (fly) complete with hook and weapon is in the warriors left hand. This hooded figure is bearing the burden of their child while going into battle. The child is symbolic of a future warrior, offspring; population growth which is shifting the balance of power from weapon warfare to the strategy of population power. A halo of feathers encircle the infants body
The playing field (game board) in the case is the faulty Y2K Intel chip that was removed from Harkrader's computer prior to January 1, 2000 (y2k). The Intel chip is mounted on a turned brass pedestal. The chip covered with over 400 gold plated connection points, other computer chips that are symbolic to 'time'. The game board, the cube and the hands of each warrior is embedded with seven Swarovski crystals from Switzerland.
This sculpture is available today for $650. The size is small at (4.2” x 4” x 4”)
